Burntwood Junior and Infant School is a community school in the Minsthorpe Pyramid of schools. The school was built in 1964 as an infants school and was extended to include two additional classrooms in the playground when it became a First School.
In September 1996 the School re-opened as a junior and infant School, with a new purpose built Nursery on-site and extensions to the main building. The school now serves children from 3+ to 11 years of age.
The grounds give ample facilities for P. E. with tarmac play areas that were extended in 1996 and considerable grassed areas including a sports field. A school kitchen in the main building provides excellent meals with a choice of menu each day. The main building has two wings comprising six classrooms in all. The Infants occupy one wing nearest to their outdoor play area and the Juniors are in the other wing nearest to the reference library. Each wing has shared areas and toilet facilities. A central Hall is used as a Dining Hall, Assembly Hall and P E. gymnasium as well as for some lessons such as music and drama.
All the schools in the area, which serve the Minsthorpe Community College, work together within this pyramid group, therefore close links and liaison are maintained between local schools.
